Couples Counselling

Counselling for couples
with lilliana gibbs

It's easy for couples to stop hearing each other while their partner keeps voicing their own unmet needs. Contact gets lost, and so does the confidence that differences can be worked through. Getting back on track usually means learning new ways of listening, speaking, and managing your own reactions when triggered — the capacity to stay steady when your partner has lost their balance.

Couples counselling is a touchstone in the rough patches: a safe place to unpick the messy knitting life has become, sort through what's been building, and get some clarity back. It can also support you through the changes that put pressure on any relationship — a new baby, a career shift, money,  illness, loss.

In crisis, counselling can help you move past pain and defensiveness to begin to see your own patterns — and to find out honestly whether trust can be rebuilt. If it can't, it can help both of you separate with more understanding and less hostility.

I also work with divorcing and separated couples who want to co-parent well — this is some of the most valuable work there is, easing suffering for the whole family and building relationship skills that outlast the relationship itself.

It is not our differences that divide us.

It is our inability to recognize, accept,

and celebrate those differences.

HOW TO START
COUPLES COUNSELLING

A first session is always exploratory, with no further commitment attached — counselling is relational, so it has to feel like a good fit before anything else. Most couples I work with commit initially to six sessions and review from there; typically we work together for somewhere between 6 and 12 months. Every couple's circumstances are different, so we shape the arrangement to what best supports you.
